Question on automated bans, and eventual unban appeal

I have been banned for trashing three helicopters, due to my lack of pilot skill (no other players hurt or killed apart from myself). I am not entirely sure, but I believe it was an automatic ban, as it happened exactly when the third helicopter was destroyed. I don't demand to be unbanned for it, as it clearly was my mistake and I deserve punishment, however I would like to know, if these bans are permanent. If so, I request to be unbanned with a warning, as I now realized, that fooling around with team resources is no less bad than excessive teamkilling, and my actions are unacceptable. If unbanned I promise to never touch a cockpit again, until I am properly trained in its use.
